High-tech designs with lighting are dramatic. Some change colour, and, as this is powered by the water flow, there is no wasted energy. Water-saving shower heads reduce consumption without limiting pressure. Some restrict the water flow by injecting air into the stream, or by pulsing the water flow, which is undetectable to the user but still saves water. In hard-water areas, look for models with nozzles that have a plastic head rather than metal to make removing limescale easier.
Water pressure more important than volume. When buying a new shower head, try to match it to the existing hardware, which is usually chrome or brushed nickel, Johnson says. He highly recommends products from Pulse Shower Spas, which feature a shower head, a detachable hand shower and multiple body sprays. They range in price from $200 to more than $1,000. Libsack, however, recommends installing a smaller unit. “People like to feel the pressure even more than they do the volume,” he says. “So I recommend that they get away from large rain heads, and stick with 8-inch or smaller shower heads.”
